Sennen Cove — Cornwall, England
The village of Sennen is located approximately one mile from Lands End on the South West tip of Cornwall. Originally this was an old fishing harbor with a splendid beach that today relies upon tourism for its economy.
Sennen Cove Harbor still has a small fishing fleet as well as a small number of pleasure fishing boats, but does not encourage anchorage to visiting boats except in an emergency due to the hazardous seaward approach with shoal areas, Atlantic swells and strong tidal streams.
During rough seas the waves are spectacular with sprays reaching the top of the Pedn-men-du Cliffs. The Pedn-men-du draws many climbers, and the cliff path which goes through Sennen Cove is very popular with walkers. Pedn-men-du Cliff also serves to protect Sennen Cove from the prevailing westerlies off the Atlantic Ocean. The Cove offers a safe beach and tide pools to explore, but is also a favorite with surfers who enjoy surfing as an art rather than for competition. Sennen Cove is also a haven for birdwatchers and photography enthusiasts; and the Cliffs are also popular with equestrians who enjoy the spectacular views while leisurely riding the cliff paths.
Sennen Cove offers not only beauty and abounding scenic views, but also legends of treachery and ghosts. The most well known ghost resides at the First & Last Inn. This is one of the most famous inns in Cornwall, built about seven centuries ago and gaining a notorious reputation when it was known to be the headquarters of smugglers and wreckers. During the peak of the trade at the beginning of the 1800s people of every status were thought to be involved with smuggling. Many valuable goods were smuggled in from France and the smugglers would use secret tunnels to evade government officials. The ghost tale surrounding the Inn involves Annie George who made many enemies during this period of time when she gave King's evidence against some of the smugglers. Her enemies did away with her, and her ghost is purported to still be in her room at the Inn with strange tales, cold chills and sightings over the years. There is still a glass covered well in the Inn known as Annie's Well which is visited by many tourists.
